The idea for the album cover came from the music.  It describes music from a film that didn’t exist.  Many of the songs have film-like reference.

The illustrations for the album cover were done by Humphrey Oceans and drawn in pencil.  The artwork was done from photographs of Steenbeck and related film equipment.

The album cover has an image of The Beatles' faces drawn upside down, which was similar to a design on Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding album.

The picture of the cowboy, on the Steenbeck screen on the front of the cover, ended up there by accident.  The original idea was to have this hole cut out, and a picture of the band on the inner sleeve would show through.  On the original artwork, where the die-hole was just a plain white space Oceans put a picture of Anthony Perkins from the movie Lonely Man.
