ABBA
ABBA first burst onto
the scene in 1974. They won the
Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton with their song “Waterloo.”
“Waterloo” went on to become their first international hit.
It was Number 1 in the UK, and even entered the top ten in the USA.
ABBA was named after
the first letters of the names of the four members of the group.
They are Bjorn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, also known as Frida.
Bjorn was married to Agnetha, and later Benny and Anni-Frid also got
married to each other.
Some of their biggest
hits in the seventies were “Money, Money, Money”, “Knowing Me, Knowing
You,” “Mamma Mia” and “Fernando.”
Perhaps their biggest hit was “Dancing Queen.”
“Dancing Queen” topped the charts all over the world, and even
reached Number 1 in America.
They were one of the
biggest groups in the world. They
were famous for their catchy songs and their amazing costumes.
They were the biggest thing since the Beatles.
Their last live
concerts were in 1980. By 1981 both
couples were divorced, and there were few more songs.
They remain very popular. Tribute
bands play their music and people dress up in their costumes.
The compilation CD “ABBA Gold” has sold more than 25 million copies since 1992. The stage show “Mamma Mia”, which includes many of their hits, has been a hit in many countries.
