Getting Pictures and Text from the Internet

In this assignment you are going to find some pictures and text on the internet and put them into your own document.

There are 2 simple ways to do this, and you will get practice at both of them here.

Different web browsers - such as Internet Explorer or Netscape - work in different ways.  How you can do this operation best will depend on which browser you use.

You will need to be able to do these things with your computer:

  • open a new document

  • switch between different windows

  • move pictures and frames or text boxes on a page

  • general copy and paste techniques

You will end up with a document that looks something like this:  Click here

Section 1
1.   Firstly you will need to open a new Word document (or similar word-processing file).
2.   You will need to be able to move between the internet and the Word document using the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen.
3.   You may also need you floppy disk for this.

Section 2

1.   Now find a picture on this site:          Coronation Street

2.   Click places of interest to you on this site, until you have a picture you like.
3.   Have the mouse over the picture and right click - then click “save picture as”.  Save it to your floppy in the normal way.  You can probably use the name of the file from the internet - but you can give it a new name if you wish.
4.   When the file is on your floppy you can now insert it into your document.  Switch to the Word Processor. For Word it is choose the Insert menu then click picture
5.   When the file is in your document you can place it where you want and resize it to a suitable size.

Section 3
1.     Now choose a piece of text which will act as a caption for your document.
2.   Mark the text with the mouse in the usual way.  You should be able to copy it to the clipboard with the right click or go to the edit button.
3.   Switch back to the document.
4.   Open a text box or a frame and paste your text into the box.
5.   You can now move the box to a suitable place and shape beside your picture.

Section 4

1.   When you have finished with Coronation Street, try this site:  BBC News Online

2.   You want to get a picture and caption for something from today’s news.  Find a story which interests you and a picture of a good size - you may get thumbnails which you can click to get full size pictures.
3.   When you have chosen your picture, copy it to the clipboard with right click and copy, switch to your document and paste the picture in.  If you find you cannot do this (for instance with Netscape) you will have to save the file and insert it as you did with the Coronation Street picture.
4.   Move it where you want to place it.
5.   Finally chose relevant text and copy and paste it into a box in the same way as before.

Section 5
1.   Now you should have two pictures and captions to match them.
2.   To finish off your project, give your document an appropriate title.
3.   Then put your name and the date on it somewhere.

Section 6
1.   You can show your completed project to a tutor if you wish.

Now try these techniques with your own projects
