WEB DESIGN FOR BUSINESS AND PLEASURE
Assessment Criteria
5.1. Domain Names
To register a Domain Name you need to go through the following procedures.
- Choose your domain name and check its availability online via one of the search facilities. It must be a unique address to describe your site. e.g. www.john_smith.co.uk
- Choose your service provider - either a commercial provider or your own ISP who often provide free web space. Prices vary a great deal and you tend to get what you pay for. Some of the very cheap offers hide extra charges so read the small print. For a basic personal site your ISP will probably be sufficient.
- Log onto your chosen provider and follow the instructions for registering your domain name.
6.1. Internet Service Providers
An ISP is a type of server (a very large computer) that provides access to the internet for subscribers. Companies like AOL, Freeserve, BT etc. all provide this service. Once you have joined/subscribed you only have to click on your browser and you can automatically be connected to the home page of your choice. Services such as multiple e-mail accounts, web space for your own web page, web authoring packages (sometimes) and access to newsgroups are all provided as part of the package.6.2. Web Hosting Services
Web hosting services provide a secure system for a person's or company's web site. Depending on who you choose to subscribe to you will be given any or all of the following - a fixed amount of web space and bandwidth, a web forwarding facility, FTP facility, access to your site statistics and often domain registration as well.6.3.
