Genealogy
- The Mormon Family History SiteThis is a great site for searching on named relatives. They have millions of names from all over the world on their site and you can key in your ancestors names to find out if they have their baptism, marriage or death details on file. It is free of charge and indispensible for searching on 'possible' relatives. They have various other services on line which you can discover when you log on.
- Cyndi's List. This site, set up by Cyndi Howells, is a collection of 85,000 links to genealogy sites of all kinds. Unimissable.
- The Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Here you can find records nearly 2 million war graves. The records give name and rank and place of death and sometimes details of next of kin.
- UK & Ireland Genealogy. This helpful information service covers the basics in genealogy.
- GENUKI Elford Page Some Elford statistics.
- The Public Record Office. The PRO gives advice on using documents such as birth and marriage certificates. This is the central repository in London for family history research.
- Family Records Centre in London A sub division of the PRO where you will find information on the Northern Ireland and India record offices.
- Scots Origins This site claims to be the only comprehensive database of Scotland's government records. It is a pay per view site, costing £6 per 30 pages. A selection of the Society of Genealogist's records are also available on the site. This English Origins database contains 1m names from 1568-1850. Boyd's Marriage Index with 6m records will be added this year.
- Familia This guide to the genealogical resources available in Britain's and in Ireland's public libraries is a subproject of the Earl Consortium (public library networking body). Plans are afoot to expand it into a family-history portal.
- Genealogy.com An American based learning centre containing tips and articles on family history. Contains a large American database with many British names.
- Society of Genealogists This gives background information and guides to offline records rather than a facility to search an online database. You can check what they have in their extensive library and there are articles from the 'Computers in Genealogy' magazine. A list of parish registers held is also available.
- Sue's Staffordshire Family History Research Services A service for tracing your ancestors.
