Why does the UCAS form have a section for personal statements' ?

Section 10 of the UCAS form asks you to give some relevant background information about yourself. As well as discussing things that you are interested in this personal statement should give the reasons for your choice of course. This is your chance to tell the universities and colleges you have chosen why you are applying and why they should want you as a student. A good personal statement is important and could help to persuade the admissions officer to offer you a place.

This is an opportunity to demonstrate the thought and consideration that has gone into your choices. You should try to show that you are motivated and committed to the subject and you should try to explain your career aspirations.

A personal statement is the only part on the UCAS form that gives you the opportunity to sell yourself to the admissions tutors. You can select and emphasise certain points about yourself that you feel will help your application. Use this chance to give tutors a flavour of who you are; remember to be honest and specific but let your personality show through by talking about your strengths, skills, experiences and interests.

Universities receive thousands of application forms every year and it can be difficult to tell people apart just from the facts on a form. 'Section 10' helps them to form a more accurate idea of who you are and whether or not you are likely to enjoy and complete the course you are applying for.
