A quick guide to questionnaires

  1. Decide whether or not you need a questionnaire and what you are trying to learn from it.
  2. Write possible questions in rough and chose only those that you need.
    • Make sure that they are clear and simple
    • Decide whether they are open or closed
    • Pre-code them if possible
  3. Consider doing a short pilot study by trying the questions out on a couple of volunteers.
  4. Ensure that the questionnaire explains who you are, what course you are on and what you are researching. Make certain that you reassure people about confidentiality.
  5. Word process the questionnaire and have copies made.
  6. Chose your sample and issue the questionnaires.
  7. Collect in the completed sheets.
  8. Code the answers and enter them onto a grid.
  9. Produce you statistical data.
  10. Write up the results.
